One Gram Gold Rings to Be Distributed to Newborns Starting June 2026

Chennai, 18 September – From 22 June 2026, every infant born in a Tamil Nadu government hospital will receive a gold ring weighing one gram. The “Thayman Thanga Mothiram” initiative, announced by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, is designed to encourage institutional births and honour traditional customs.

The programme will run until 28 September 2026, with daily allocations of 100 rings across 107 distribution hubs. Each ring carries a unique serial number and is sealed in tamper‑proof packaging to ensure authenticity.

The state’s health department has already secured 128,000 rings for the first phase. Eligibility requires permanent residency, registration on the state’s health management system and a valid RCH ID.

Tamil Nadu officials believe the incentive will increase confidence in government hospitals, improve delivery rates, and provide added security for mothers and newborns.
