On‑ground assessment: Odisha government accelerates rescue and relief after floods

In a hands‑on review of flood‑relief measures, Chief Minister Mohan Chandra Majhi travelled by scooter and boat to the most affected hamlets of Jajpur and Bhadrak on August 17. Accompanied by senior ministers and district officers, the CM inspected emergency shelters, sampled the hot food being distributed, and held dialogue with farmers about the loss of paddy crops.

He highlighted that relief teams are currently providing dry rations, freshly cooked meals, safe drinking water and basic medical aid to displaced households. Majhi’s update on X declared that rescue operations are being run at a “war‑like” pace, with continuous efforts to evacuate residents, deliver essential supplies and respond instantly to emerging needs.

The administration’s dashboard shows six districts – Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendujhar, Mayurbhanj and Kendrapara – encompassing 66 blocks, 448 gram panchayats, 1,304 villages and 10 urban local authorities have suffered flood damage. More than 7.8 million people are reported to be affected, while roughly 2.7 million have already been shifted to relief centers.

Officials assured that monitoring of the situation remains rigorous and any gaps in food, water or health services will be addressed without delay, reinforcing the state’s commitment to protect its citizens.
