Compensation Announced as OIL Faces Investigation Over Explosion
Oil India Limited confirmed a compensation package for victims of the 6 November explosion at its Tengakhat oil tank farm in Assam, while also preparing for a comprehensive investigation ordered by senior government officials.
The tragedy claimed three lives – engineer Tapas Jyoti GogoI, an unnamed second victim, and Ragam Gohain, who initially survived severe injuries before passing away after being moved to a Guwahati hospital. Four additional workers sustained serious injuries and remain under intensive care.
Following the incident, OIL placed four employees on suspension – three senior officials and one frontline worker – for alleged negligence in overseeing safety procedures. The company stated that disciplinary measures will remain in effect until the investigation concludes.
Financial relief will be provided as follows: Rs 10 lakh to each family of the deceased and Rs 5 lakh to every injured employee. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal visited the wounded at Aastha Hospital, called for the highest level of medical support, and demanded that the oil giant supply full compensation to the bereaved.
The minister also pressed for an independent, high‑ranking inquiry to uncover the technical and managerial failures that led to the blast. OIL has pledged full cooperation with the investigative team and has vowed to overhaul its safety standards to prevent future incidents.
