Northern Command Highlights Border Security Role in Poonch Review

The Northern Command, responsible for safeguarding India’s northern frontiers, oversees deployments along the Line of Control (LoC) with Pakistan and the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China. During the Poonch visit, the command reiterated its dual mandate of preventing cross‑border infiltration and conducting internal security and counter‑insurgency operations within Jammu and Kashmir. Units such as the 14 Corps in Leh (LAC duties), 15 Corps in Srinagar (Kashmir valley operations) and 16 Corps in Nagerota (Jammu sector) were cited as key elements of the region’s defence architecture. The command also referenced the role of the National Rifle Regiment, formed in 1990, in supporting law and order under the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act.
