North Assam Patients to Get Super Specialty Care Closer to Home
Patients in North Assam may soon get access to advanced super specialty treatment without having to travel far from home. The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, announced on Thursday that a super specialty hospital worth Rs 208 crore will come up at Tezpur Medical College and Hospital.
Announcing the plan on X, the Chief Minister said the proposed facility will have seven specialised departments. He stressed that families should be spared the burden of long-distance travel for treatment, so that the focus remains on helping the patient recover completely.
According to officials' statements shared by the Chief Minister, the initiative aims to expand access to better healthcare in the region. The hospital is expected to build on the existing medical infrastructure of Tezpur Medical College and Hospital, which serves Sonitpur and nearby districts.
The need for such facilities is clear. Depending on how serious an illness is and what treatment it requires, patients from northern parts of the state have often had to travel to large health centres such as Guwahati. The new departments could widen the scope of services available locally and reduce both financial and travel-related strain on patients and families.
While the announcement has been welcomed as a significant step, several important details are still awaited. The government has not yet shared the names of the seven departments, the construction timeline, the planned bed capacity, or the likely start date of services.
The development reflects a wider push by Assam to strengthen its healthcare system through new medical colleges, hospitals and specialised treatment facilities. In recent years, the state has also expanded its network of medical colleges outside Guwahati to improve access to both medical education and healthcare.
The larger goal is to ensure that advanced medical care is not limited to a few urban centres but reaches people across the state. Once operational, the proposed super specialty facility at Tezpur is expected to add to the capacity of the institution and benefit patients who need specialised care.
