A storm erupted in Kerala’s cultural circles when actor Prem Kumar was eased out of his leadership role at the Kerala State Film Academy. Culture Minister Saji Cherian moved quickly to douse the flames on Saturday, releasing a comprehensive statement that framed the transition as standard administrative housekeeping, detached from Kumar’s outspoken opinions.
This came in direct response to Kumar’s heartfelt social media post lamenting the lack of due process in his removal. Cherian acknowledged the gravity of such concerns from a film industry veteran, committing the government to smooth resolutions.
The minister highlighted the Left government’s tradition of upholding free expression for artists linked to public bodies. Personal viewpoints, whether from Kumar or poet K. Satchidanandan, remain just that—personal—and never dictate personnel changes, he asserted.
In laying out the timeline, Cherian recalled Kumar’s progression from Vice-Chairman to interim Chairman after Ranjith’s exit. His tenure was commendable, but the governing council’s term end triggered the mandatory reconstitution.
Oscar-winner Resul Pookutty has taken the helm, with Cherian noting Kumar’s positive reaction to the appointment. Any shortfall in formal communication will be probed, and the minister extended an olive branch for open discussions to heal any wounds.
Cherian concluded by honoring Kumar’s invaluable role in the arts and his contributions to the Academy, aiming to put the matter to rest amicably.
