No New NSA Order Issued Ahead of Protest, Delhi Police Says

In a statement released on July 23, Delhi Police dismissed media reports claiming that a fresh National Security Act order was granted to curb the anti‑government rallies. The department clarified that the existing NSA authority, renewed on a regular three‑month cycle, continues to apply.

The Lieutenant Governor’s order dated July 15 provided the Police Commissioner with NSA powers from July 19 to October 18, permitting preventive detention under Section 3(2) if deemed necessary for national security or public safety.

Officials stressed that this renewal was part of an established administrative practice and not a reaction to the protests. The order had already been in force before the demonstrators gathered, and no separate directive has been introduced.

Thus, the police maintain that the NSA framework remains unchanged and operates under its usual procedural timetable.
