New Protocol in Meghalaya Prioritises Public Recognition Over Political Honors

Meghalaya has introduced a revised protocol for all state‑funded programmes. Effective immediately, no ceremony will be held to honour the chief minister, deputy chief minister, ministers or any other high‑ranking official.

The Personnel and Administrative Reforms department issued the order through a circular that requires each department to identify two to three community members who have contributed meaningfully to society and to honour them during the event. These citizens may also be asked to address the audience briefly.

An exception is allowed for events that involve a central minister or a foreign dignitary, where protocol may call for a formal tribute. The government believes the change will streamline official functions, cut down on procedural delays, and bring greater public focus to the deeds of everyday heroes.

All administrative units have been instructed to update their event calendars and adhere strictly to the new guidelines, ensuring that future state programmes reflect a more people‑oriented ethos.
