New highway aims to link remote districts, enhance market access

The Meghalaya government has embarked on a Rs 140 crore road upgrade that will transform the Veloi‑Mavkirwat‑Rangthong corridor into a high‑capacity artery for the South‑West Khasi Hills. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma described the road as a catalyst for regional growth, stating that reliable connectivity is essential for agriculture, trade and tourism. By reducing travel distances and costs, the project will enable villagers to reach health centres, schools and markets more efficiently. Sangma highlighted the state’s commitment to inclusive development, noting that the initiative is fully financed from Meghalaya’s own resources and forms part of a broader Rs 990 crore investment package covering roads, drinking water, education, health and tourism. Since 2018, over Rs 850 crore have been spent in the South‑West Khasi Hills, and the state has built more than 3,200 km of roads in eight years—roughly one kilometre daily. The upgraded highway is projected to stimulate local economies, improve the supply chain for farm produce, and generate new opportunities for entrepreneurs and tourism operators.
