New DYFI Leadership Faces Rebuilding Challenge

The Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) in Kerala has unveiled a new leadership team headed by Chinta Jerome, marking the first time a woman will steer the state unit. The 16th state conference in Trichur saw Jerome, a former SFI activist from Kollam with a doctorate in English literature, take over as state president.

Alongside her, Kalyassery MLA M. Vijin was appointed state secretary and R. Rahul became treasurer, as declared by DYFI national president A.A. Rahim. The reshuffle comes at a crucial juncture for the Communist Party of India (Marxist), which is grappling with diminished influence after losing the Tiruvananthapuram corporation in the 2025 elections and suffering a defeat in the recent assembly polls.

Jerome’s career has been marked by several controversies, including questions surrounding her doctoral thesis and public remarks, yet she retains membership on both the DYFI central committee and the CPI(M) state committee. Her elevation reflects the party’s attempt to project a modern, inclusive image while tackling the task of renewing its political relevance.

The restructuring also impacted former mayor Arya Rajendran, who was incorporated into the 25‑member state secretariat, suggesting that the party is trying to retain seasoned activists while promoting emerging leaders.
