New APU Supply Boosts Reliability of Indian T‑72 and T‑90 Battle Tanks

The Ministry of Defence has signed a 586‑crore‑rupee contract with Accurate Industrial Controls Pvt Ltd. to provide auxiliary power units for the Indian Army’s T‑72 and T‑90 main battle tanks.

APUs act as a standby electrical source for essential tank systems, including fire‑control, gun‑stabilisation and firing circuits. Their integration allows crews to keep these subsystems active while the main engine remains idle, thereby conserving fuel and extending engine wear life.

The procurement is a key step toward the Atmanirbhar Bharat agenda, promoting indigenous development of critical defence components. The Ministry highlighted that the vast fleet of T‑72, T‑90, Arjun tanks and BMP vehicles will sustain demand for APUs in the years ahead.

Furthermore, the Ministry sees export potential in markets where Soviet‑origin tanks remain in service, such as Iran, Iraq, Egypt and several former Eastern‑bloc nations, positioning India as a future supplier of advanced tank power solutions.
