Neighbouring State Looks to Replicate Uttarakhand’s Uniform Civil Code Model

Uttarakhand’s recent enactment and enforcement of the Uniform Civil Code have attracted attention beyond its borders. Mahamandaleshwar Karoli Shankar Mahadev noted that another Indian state is actively studying Uttarakhand’s legislative blueprint, eyeing a similar rollout of the UCC.

He emphasized that the core of the Uttarakhand model is strict compliance and a balanced handling of religious sensitivities. “We have ensured that no religious sentiment is hurt while upholding the rule of law,” he asserted. The speaker also pointed out that the state’s crackdown on land encroachment and its compensation scheme for riot‑related damages have set a precedent for efficient governance.

If the upcoming state follows suit, the move could accelerate the national conversation on a unified civil law, potentially reshaping how personal matters such as marriage, inheritance and adoption are regulated across India.
