NEET‑UG 2024 Leak Case: CBI Files No Charge Sheet Against Sanjeev Mukhiya

In a statement released on July 23, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) clarified that it will not be filing a charge sheet against Sanjeev Kumar, commonly known as Sanjeev Mukhiya, in connection with the NEET‑UG 2024 paper‑leak controversy. The agency cited a lack of admissible evidence after an intensive, multi‑stage investigation.

The controversy originated when Bihar police uncovered the disappearance of the NEET‑UG 2024 question paper and initiated a criminal case, naming Mukhiya among the accused based on his prior alleged involvement in exam‑paper thefts. The police subsequently transferred the matter to the CBI for a more thorough examination.

The CBI’s investigative team examined digital footprints, intercepted communications, and conducted a series of interrogations. It succeeded in filing charge sheets against 45 individuals who were proven to have taken part in the illicit network that handled the stolen paper. Nevertheless, none of the collected evidence — including phone records, financial transactions, or witness statements — placed Mukhiya in the conspiracy.

During a brief period, Mukhiya evaded capture but was later detained by Bihar law‑enforcement agencies for other pending cases. He was then produced before the CBI for formal questioning regarding the NEET‑UG leak. After reviewing all the interrogation transcripts and supporting documentation, the bureau concluded that the prosecution lacked a factual basis to pursue charges against him.

Consequently, Mukhiya was granted bail and formally cleared of any involvement in the NEET‑UG 2024 paper‑leak. The CBI reiterated that the broader investigation is concluded, all participants have been identified, and the legal process will continue against those with substantiated links to the crime.
