NDA allies reportedly split over UCC implementation, says J&K chief minister

Srinagar, September 15 – In a rare public statement, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Umar Abdullah highlighted cracks within the National Democratic Alliance over the Uniform Civil Code. While BJP‑run states are moving ahead with the code, Abdullah said certain alliance partners are openly resisting its rollout.

He cited statements from Janata Dal (United), which has declared that the UCC will not be introduced in Bihar. Abdullah questioned how the coalition could champion a nationwide law when its own members are unwilling to adopt it locally.

The chief minister reiterated that any policy affecting the entire nation must be deliberated and passed by Parliament, the institution representing every citizen. "Law making is a central responsibility, not a state‑by‑state experiment," he asserted.

Abdullah also raised a broader procedural issue, asking why the government prefers state‑level implementation for a code that impacts personal law across the country, while other major reforms have been stuck in parliamentary limbo.

His comments add to an ongoing debate about federalism, the balance of power between centre and states, and the political cohesion of the NDA coalition.
