Rituals and Mantras for Navratri’s Kalratri Night
The seventh night of Navratri is dedicated to the fierce yet benevolent form of the Mother, Kalratri. Devotees observe a set of specific rituals designed to honor her and invoke her protective energy.
Key elements include keeping an akhand jyoti (continuous flame) burning from sunset till dawn, offering black sesame seeds (kala til) as a symbol of darkness transformed into light, and maintaining a fast or light diet to heighten spiritual focus.
The central chant for the evening is the mantra “Om Aim Hreem Kleem Chamundayai Vicche”. Repeating this verse while meditating on the goddess is said to cleanse the mind, dissolve negativity and invite divine courage.
Priests or senior family members may lead a short yagna, sprinkling sacred water and incense. The ceremony concludes with the lighting of a large lamp, symbolizing the triumph of Kalratri’s illumination over all obstacles.
Participants leave the ceremony with prayers for personal safety, family welfare and the removal of any lingering fears.
