Research identifies Narara Reef as prime dolphin hotspot in Gujarat's coastal park

According to GEER Foundation Director B.P. Pati, the majority of dolphin activity was recorded along reef boundaries, island margins and tidal channels where the animals seek food and navigate. The Narara Reef emerged as the most important zone, with 39 dolphins spotted in 14 separate observations. The Derka-Mundeka islands followed closely, registering 41 dolphins across 12 trips. Pati highlighted that the fast‑flowing tidal streams in the bay aggregate plankton and small fish, making these corridors vital for dolphin foraging. The study also noted that dolphins formed groups ranging from solitary individuals to pods of sixteen, displaying characteristic social behavior such as synchronized surface jumps, direction changes with currents and coordinated hunting tactics.
