Nanoparticle‑based chemotherapy is designed to ferry anticancer drugs directly to malignant cells, but the liver often intercepts a substantial portion before it can act. By giving metronidazole for a limited period, researchers observed that the circulating drug persisted almost twice as long as in untreated controls. This prolonged exposure allowed more drug molecules to infiltrate the tumor microenvironment, slowing disease progression in colon, breast, melanoma and pancreatic cancer mouse models. The findings suggest that a brief antibiotic regimen could be a practical adjunct to existing nanomedicine protocols.
