Nagpur Graduates Seat Keeps Congress Afloat in Council Polls

A single victory in Nagpur has spared Congress from a complete washout in the Legislative Council elections held across four states. The party won just one of the 28 seats in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra and Karnataka where biennial polls were conducted.

In Maharashtra, Abhijit Wanjari retained the Nagpur Graduates constituency for Congress. Had the party lost this seat as well, the outcome would have been a complete failure, something several observers had been anticipating.

The overall performance remains weak. Congress recorded a win rate of only 3.57 per cent, and many of its regional allies outperformed the national party in the same polls.

Social media posts from several BJP leaders had earlier ridiculed the possibility of Congress finishing with zero seats. The Nagpur result now gives the party an answer to those jibes and a reason to claim it still has pockets of support.

Nagpur is widely regarded as a Congress stronghold, and party leaders say the win will lift the spirits of workers and local office-bearers. They also argue that the party's influence among educated and graduate voters has not yet faded.

Karnataka was a disappointment, despite the Congress government in the state. The Bengaluru Teachers seat loss stung in particular. JD(S) candidate A.P. Ranganath defeated sitting MLC Puttanna by close to 900 votes in a constituency seen as significant for the party in the capital region.

In Bihar, the Darbhanga Teachers seat also went against the party. Madan Mohan Jha, a sitting MLC who had won the seat twice, lost a tough fight to Suresh Prasad Rai of Jan Suraaj Party. Reports point to a split in INDIA bloc votes after the RJD fielded its own candidate, which weakened Congress's traditional voter base.

The results once again highlight Congress's limited role within the opposition camp. Parties such as the RJD in Bihar, the Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh, and the NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) and Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray faction) in Maharashtra appeared more effective.

Taken together, the Nagpur win provides Congress with some political relief. However, the broader picture shows that the BJP and its allies continued to dominate the Council polls.
