Nagpur Crane Accident Leaves Two Dead, Two Hurt at MHADA Site
Safety concerns at construction sites have once again come into focus after a crane accident in Nagpur left two workers dead and two others injured on Friday.
The accident happened at a construction project in the Ganeshpeth area, located within the premises of the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA). The project involves building a textile park and a commercial complex.
Two cranes were working at the location. One of them lost its upper section, which fell from around 100 feet and hit the adjacent crane. The debris did not land on the main road, situated about 30 feet away, sparing commuters from a possible larger tragedy.
Initially, four people were reported injured. Later confirmation revealed that two of them had lost their lives.
B.G. Shirke Construction Company has been awarded the contract for the textile park and commercial complex at the MHADA site.
DCP Rahul Madne of Zone 2 said the construction was being handled by a firm associated with Vijay Shirke. At about 10:30 am on Friday, three workers were present with the crane operator when the crane became unstable and toppled. The crane operator and one worker were killed instantly. The two injured workers are undergoing treatment at a hospital.
The cause of the crane collapse will be examined in consultation with officials from the concerned mechanical department.
The deceased were identified as Vishwanath Katare, a resident of Bhandara, and Mukesh Nishad, from Uttar Pradesh. The DCP said both were standing on the structure during the incident. The injured workers hail from Jharkhand.
Police are gathering information from the company's supervisory staff and taking appropriate steps. Whether work at the site will be stopped is a decision for the company to make. An accidental death case has been registered.
