Naga Council Calls for Fast Investigation After Deadly Manipur Assault

The United Naga Council (UNC) has demanded an immediate and comprehensive investigation into the Thursday attack that left four Liangmai Naga civilians dead, including a private school principal, in Kangpokpi district.

Police reports confirm that the assailants, identified as Kuki insurgents, ambushed a vehicle traveling between Makui Ashang and Thanamba Naga. The victims – Visobu Charenamui, Tadsongbu Ringkhangmai, Mariakdibu Vijunamai and Anil Vijunamai – were shot at close range and died on the spot. One passenger, Gakamang Ringkhangmai, survived with injuries.

UNC spokespersons accused the state administration of discriminatory security deployment, pointing out that the area is under a suspended Operation (SOO) arrangement that allegedly grants undue freedom to Kuki militants.

The council called on the government to arrest the gunmen without delay, to prosecute them swiftly, and to establish a Special Investigation Team (SIT) dedicated to the case. It also warned that the incident threatens the fragile peace process, ongoing political negotiations, and the very existence of the Naga people on their ancestral lands.

In a related development, the Naga People’s Organization (NPO) forced the closure of commercial outlets in Senapati headquarters, demanding stronger protection for civilians traveling along the IT Road.
