Early Thursday, the winding Mussoorie-Dehradun road claimed another life when a water tanker veered off the edge near Gajji Band and plunged about 50 metres into a ravine. The driver, Akshay Aswal, 25, was trapped inside the cab until local people and police teams managed to free him. Despite frantic attempts to save him, Akshay was declared dead at Mussoorie’s civil hospital. Doctors noted multiple severe injuries consistent with the high-impact crash. The tanker, carrying a full load of water, had been heading toward Mussoorie when the driver apparently lost control. Authorities say an inquiry is underway to establish whether speeding, road conditions, or a mechanical fault triggered the accident. Meanwhile, grief has spread across nearby villages as news of the young driver’s death reached his family in Sahaspur block. Community leaders have renewed calls for urgent safety upgrades on the route, including guardrails at blind curves and reflective warning signs. They argue that without such measures, similar fatal crashes will continue to haunt the highway.
