Mumbai Hospital Resident Doctor’s Death Sparks New Investigation
Shivsharan Patel, a postgraduate surgery resident at Mumbai's Sion Hospital, was discovered dead in his hostel bathroom on the evening of 10 October. Preliminary reports suggest an overdose of anesthetic agents, pointing to a self‑inflicted act. The police have opened a case, and a forensic post‑mortem has been scheduled to confirm the cause of death.
Patel's demise brings renewed scrutiny to resident training environments, echoing a similar tragedy that occurred in August at Gujarat's New Civil Hospital in Surat. That earlier episode resulted in the suspension of four senior physicians after investigations revealed ragging and mental harassment. Department heads were also served notice for failing to safeguard junior doctors.
No written suicide note was found, but witnesses claim Patel endured continuous mental pressure from senior doctors. Gujarat's health minister has warned that such abuse will not be tolerated and has called for immediate disciplinary measures against those responsible.
