Authorities Warn of Flooding and Infrastructure Risk in MP

The Bhopal regional office of the India Meteorological Department has issued an alert for scattered thunderstorms in many districts of Madhya Pradesh. The notice cites light to moderate gusts, frequent lightning and rain expected shortly.

The forecast covers Chhatarpur (Khajuraho), Panna, Katni, Singrauli, Sehore, Anuppur (Amarkantak), Dindori, Mandla (Kanha), Balaghat, Chhindwara, Pandhurna (Pench), Narmadapuram (Pachmarhi) and Raisen (Bhopalpatnam, Sanchi) where rainfall intensity could reach 5‑15 mm per hour and lightning probability is estimated at 30‑60 %.

During the midnight hours, the alert also mentions Bhopal (Berasia), Rajgarh, Vidisha, Ashoknagar, Datiya, Bhind, Sagar, Tikamgarh, Niwari, Orchha, Damoh, Narsinghpur, Shivni, Jabalpur, Satna, Chhatarpur, Maihar, Rewa, Mauganj, Umaria and Shahdol, expecting only light showers under 5 mm per hour and lightning odds below 30 %.

Officials caution that heavy downpours may cause water‑logging, slippery road conditions and disruption of traffic, especially in low‑lying areas. The storm could also damage fragile structures, topple trees and cause short‑term power failures. Farmers are told that standing crops might incur slight to moderate damage.

Residents are urged to remain inside, keep away from trees, ponds and power poles, and seek safer shelter if living in makeshift homes. Drivers should reduce speed on wet roads and avoid routes that are prone to sudden flooding.

The government has activated emergency response plans, instructed people to secure loose items and to monitor IMD bulletins continuously. The public is also asked to stay clear of overflowing drains, rivers and reservoirs throughout the event.
