Modi’s Export-Ready Farmer Goal Powered by Collective Groups

During the inauguration of FMCAS’s online platform in Bhopal, the speaker of Madhya Pradesh’s legislative assembly, Narendra Singh Tomar, reiterated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s long‑term plan is to transform India’s agricultural producers into global exporters. He highlighted that while Indian farmers work diligently to generate food, a significant portion of the final price is captured by traders and logistics providers.

Tomar outlined the systemic issues that stunt farmer prosperity: insufficient price assurance, indirect market routes, inadequate storage infrastructure, lack of value‑addition facilities, weak branding strategies, and limited trade knowledge. He praised the role of Farmer Producer Organisations in tackling these shortcomings, stating that organized groups can secure better margins, ensure product quality, and open direct pathways to overseas buyers.

Reflecting on his former role as the Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Tomar recalled that policy discussions consistently revolved around improving farmer incomes, expanding market access, and strengthening collective bargaining power. He argued that an individual farmer’s capacity to sell abroad is minimal, but a consolidated FPO can aggregate surplus, invest in processing, develop a recognizable brand and negotiate with foreign buyers on an equal footing.

According to Tomar, the nation now boasts an extensive network of FPOs, a testament to a massive awareness drive undertaken a few years back. The next objective, he said, is to make these organisations commercially viable and export‑competent, thereby turning Modi’s aspiration of an export‑enabled farming sector into a lived reality.
