Modi Cites Energy Security in Railway Electrification During Remarks on US‑Iran Tensions

During a recent address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi referenced the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran to underline India’s energy preparedness. He said that without the rail network’s electrification, a shortage of crude oil could have stalled train services in 2014.

The prime minister highlighted that India imports roughly 87‑89 percent of its crude oil and stressed that the shift to electric traction has reduced the railway’s dependence on diesel. Gupta praised Modi’s statement, calling it a “praiseworthy” example of forward‑looking governance that earned international appreciation.
