Mobile Phone Seizure Prompts Prison Security Review for Karnataka's Former MP

Bengaluru – The recent confiscation of a mobile phone from the cell of former MP Prajwal Revanna has sparked a comprehensive security audit within Karnataka’s central prison system.

A special investigative panel, headed by DIG of Prisons and Reforms Jinendra Khanagavi, has been tasked with determining how the device entered the VIP block despite the presence of mobile‑jamming equipment. The panel will also explore the possibility of collusion among prison officials and any lapses in protocol.

Revanna, who is serving a life sentence for a rape conviction, was relocated from the VIP block to a standard cell after the phone was discovered. The move followed a 17‑second video shared widely on social media that appeared to show Revanna holding a phone inside his cell, wearing colourful attire rather than a prison uniform.

The video has not been independently verified, and jail authorities have yet to comment. Nevertheless, the incident has raised questions about how contraband can bypass stringent security measures, including the installation of jammers and regular cell inspections.

Investigators will also trace the origin of a SIM card reportedly linked to Andhra Pradesh, verify the role of any external contacts, and determine whether any jail staff facilitated the smuggling. The findings are expected to shape future security policies and may result in disciplinary action against those found negligent or complicit.
