Mizoram’s Mountain Railway Cuts Travel Time, Boosts Trade and Tourism

The Barabari‑Sairang corridor has slashed travel times dramatically, turning a multi‑day road trek into a few hours on rail. Freight operators now move essential goods, automobiles and construction material to Aizawl on schedule and at lower cost, stimulating local industry. Tourism has surged as visitors can reach the scenic hills without the previous arduous bus ride. In its first twelve months, the line recorded more than 1,100 trips, carried over 1.5 million passengers and generated roughly ₹5.4 crore in ticket revenue, underscoring its economic impact.
