Ministry Drafts Schedule M Revisions for Safer Pharma

The Central Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has introduced a formal proposal to amend Schedule M of the Drugs Rules, 1945, dated October 28. Reflected in GSR Number 953(E), the draft focuses on upgrading microbial contamination thresholds for Grade A clean rooms used in sterile pharmaceutical manufacturing.

The revision aims to eliminate inconsistencies between existing Indian regulations and the World Health Organization’s TRS No. 1044, Annex 2. Harmonizing these parameters is crucial for ensuring that India’s regulatory environment remains compatible with internationally validated quality standards.

Grade A zones play a pivotal role in sterile drug production, providing the controlled atmosphere necessary for handling exposed medicines and sterile components. The amended guidelines will enforce tighter microbial containment protocols, thereby safeguarding product integrity throughout the manufacturing process.

A key feature of the updated Schedule M is the introduction of an automatic investigation trigger. If any microbial growth is identified in a Grade A area, manufacturers will be required to initiate immediate compliance reviews. This measure significantly strengthens oversight and promotes a culture of continuous quality improvement.

By aligning domestic manufacturing prerequisites with global benchmarks, the government reaffirms its dedication to pharmaceutical safety and regulatory excellence. The proposal is currently open for public and industry feedback. Relevant parties are requested to share their concerns or recommendations via email to the Additional Secretary (Drugs Regulation) at the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
