Minister AK Sharma cracks down on drain blockage in Varanasi

Varanasi’s Urban Development and Energy Minister AK Sharma met with officials and elected representatives on September 13 to review city‑wide flood mitigation, cleaning services, electricity supply and rain‑related challenges. After a site inspection that revealed persistent water accumulation in certain neighborhoods, Sharma ordered a comprehensive survey to pinpoint all at‑risk sections. He stressed that sustainable engineering work, backed by the required budget, is essential to keep the historic city free from recurring floods.

The minister also addressed a viral video showing large plastic bags filled with gravel being dumped into major drains. Sharma denounced the act as a politically motivated sabotage that hampers water flow and fuels flooding. He confirmed that an FIR has been registered against unidentified parties and that police investigations will determine who is responsible for the deliberate obstruction.
