Mekedatu Initiative Linked to Future Drinking Water Security for Bengaluru

Bengaluru, 13 August – In a high‑level briefing, Karnataka’s Water Resources Minister N. Cheluvayya Swamy highlighted the strategic importance of the Mekedatu drinking‑water project for the long‑term water needs of Bengaluru and other key cities. The minister stressed that the scheme goes beyond irrigation, serving as a vital lifeline for urban drinking‑water supply.

During the session, senior officials presented the latest status of the project, identified pending challenges, and discussed the roadmap for rapid execution. The minister underscored that the growing urban population demands a forward‑looking water plan that anticipates demand for decades.

The agenda covered the Detailed Project Report, required clearances from the centre, environmental and forest approvals, land‑acquisition processes, rehabilitation measures, and technical specifications. Cheluvayya Swamy warned that any deviation from legal or technical standards could jeopardise the project’s timeline.

He ordered the preparation of a comprehensive action plan that captures work already done, pending approvals, and next‑phase interventions. The minister also called for seamless coordination among state departments and continuous engagement with central authorities to safeguard Karnataka’s water interests.
