Meerut Farmers Demand ₹500 per Quintal for Sugarcane and Fair Compensation for Land Acquisition

The Meerut farmers’ forum, chaired by Rakesh Tikait, listed a set of urgent requests. Chief among them is a uniform sugarcane price of ₹500 per quintal, a figure they say reflects the true cost of cultivation.

Participants highlighted that the gap between agricultural expenditure—fuel, electricity, fertiliser—and the earnings from crops keeps widening. They urged the government to align land acquisition rates with current market conditions to avoid penalising farmers who lose their land.

The gathering also stressed the need for immediate compensation for losses caused by recent floods, which have ruined standing crops and rendered fields unusable.

Tikait concluded by urging policymakers to prioritize farmer welfare in all future economic decisions, especially those involving foreign partnerships.
