Medical Negligence Allegations Rise as Five Eyes Infected Following Surgery
A fresh controversy has erupted in Rajasthan after five patients suffered severe eye infections following cataract operations at a state‑run hospital in Kuchaman City.
The patients, three women and two men, were operated on the same day and displayed symptoms of infection within a day, causing the sclera to appear white. Their cases were urgently shifted to SMS Hospital in Jaipur for advanced treatment.
SMS Medical College responded by forming an emergency medical board chaired by the head of ophthalmology, Dr. Nagendra Singh Shekhawat, with senior members from the medicine and eye‑care specialties.
Board members assert that all therapeutic measures adhere to nationally accepted protocols, but they caution that the patients’ visual prognosis remains uncertain.
The incident adds to a growing list of alleged medical negligence claims against government hospitals in the state, raising fresh questions about patient safety, surgical hygiene, and oversight mechanisms.
