Mass Seizure of Nearly 2 Tonnes of Mephredone Links to Dubai‑Sent Suspect

In a coordinated sweep across two major Indian cities, law enforcement agencies confiscated close to 1,837 kilograms of the synthetic stimulant mephedrone – 867 kilograms from Pune and 970 kilograms from Delhi. The haul is directly tied to Veerendra Basoya, who was extradited from Dubai and is now under NCB interrogation.

The scale of the seizure marks one of the largest drug busts in recent Indian history, highlighting the reach of an alleged international cartel. According to NCB officials, the substance was earmarked for distribution not only within India but also for export to neighboring regions.

Investigators contend that Basoya orchestrated the movement of the drug from India to foreign markets, leveraging his base in the United Arab Emirates to manage logistics and financing. The massive quantity seized points to a well‑structured supply chain, complete with sophisticated smuggling methods.

The case began gaining traction in 2024 after a modest 500‑gram mephedrone episode in Pune. As the investigation spiraled, NCB’s Mumbai unit identified Basoya as the central figure and pursued an Interpol red notice, culminating in his apprehension and handover to Indian authorities.

The Home Ministry has lauded the operation as a testament to the country's zero‑tolerance approach toward narcotics, pledging continued vigilance against organized drug trafficking.
