Climate Forecast Warns of Sardine Shortfall by 2027

A new climate outlook released by the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute warns that El Niño conditions could sharply reduce oil sardine availability by 2027. The warning comes despite the current year’s robust sardine harvest.

Speaking at the launch of National Fish Farmers’ Day, CMFRI director Dr. Grinson George explained that warm ocean currents expected from October to December this year are likely to intensify by April‑May 2027, affecting the northern Indian Ocean’s pelagic ecosystems.

The institute’s scientists note that oil sardine, a key small pelagic fish, reacts quickly to changes in sea‑surface temperature and salinity. A projected rise in these parameters could lead to a major contraction in the sardine population, with knock‑on effects for the broader fishing industry and coastal economies.

Beyond sardines, CMFRI warns that continued ocean warming threatens coral reef health, potentially causing bleaching events and a decline in reef‑associated fish such as red snapper.

To mitigate the looming impact, CMFRI plans to issue a set of El Niño‑focused advisories by the end of the calendar year. The documents will advise fishers on altered fishing calendars, alternative catch options, and strategies for aquaculture producers to handle abrupt salinity changes that can arise after heavy rains.

Preparedness, the institute asserts, will be crucial to sustain marine fisheries and safeguard the incomes of millions dependent on the sea.
