Maratha‑Era Temple Architecture and the Trinity Within the Lingam

The present structure of Triambakeshwar was commissioned in the 18th century by the third Maratha Peshwa, Nanasaheb Balaji Baji Rao. Built from black basalt, it exemplifies the Hemadpanti style. Uniquely, the shrine houses a small cavity inside the Shiva lingam where the three deities – Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh – appear as three thumb‑sized faces. Scholars argue that this convergence of creation, preservation and destruction energies concentrates cosmic power at a single point, making the site especially potent for resolving pitr‑dosha and related karmic disturbances.
