Malappuram Bomb Material Seizure Triggers Expanded NIA Probe

A major seizure of illegal explosives in Malappuram, Kerala, has prompted the National Investigation Agency to broaden its investigation across multiple states. The operation, which began on February 7, 2026, resulted in the confiscation of 89,600 explosive sticks and 10,500 shock tubes from a truck stopped on the Chemma‑Thalappara road.

The initial stop led to the arrest of three individuals, none of whom possessed the required permits for handling the hazardous cargo. The NIA subsequently took charge, carrying out searches at 19 locations in three states, uncovering additional prohibited materials and identifying further members of the network.

On Saturday, Harris TA, described by officials as the chief architect of the scheme, was arrested in Manjeri, raising the total number of detained suspects to ten. His detention came a day after three more accused were taken into custody in Vijayapura, Karnataka on August 7.

The agency has also named Mantagoud Biradar, Bapagoud Bheer Maya Chaudhary, and Prakash Gauda Biradar – all residents of Vijayapura – as participants who allegedly used a legitimate explosives licence to facilitate illegal transactions.

Law enforcement agencies continue to investigate the extensive illegal procurement and movement of explosives, emphasizing the threat such material poses to public safety.
