Mahrajganj's Five Assembly Seats Ahead of UP Polls 2027
Mahrajganj has long been a closely contested district in eastern Uttar Pradesh, and its five assembly constituencies are once again drawing attention ahead of the 2027 polls. Farenda, Nautanwa, Siswa, Maharajganj Sadar (SC) and Paniyara remain crucial for every major party.
In 2022, the BJP alliance secured four of the five seats. Congress managed to win only one, Farenda.
Farenda stands out as one of the most engaging seats in the district. Congress's Virendra Chaudhary wrested it from the BJP in 2022, ending a period in which BJP's Bajrang Bahadur Singh had been well placed. The contest between them was extremely close, with Chaudhary winning by 1,246 votes. He polled 85,181 votes, while Singh received 83,935. BSP's Ishu Chaurasia placed third with 21,665 votes.
Nautanwa's political record over the past three elections reflects shifting loyalties. Congress's Kaushal Kishore won the seat in 2012. Independent candidate Aman Mani Tripathi won in 2017, and in 2022 the Nishad Party's Rishi Tripathi took it.
Rishi Tripathi, an ally of the BJP alliance, won in 2022 with 90,263 votes. Samajwadi Party's Kunwar Kaushal Singh finished with 74,932 votes, and BSP's Aman Mani Tripathi came third with 46,128 votes. The victory margin was 15,331 votes.
Siswa has been a BJP-dominated seat in recent years. Premsagar Patel of the BJP won in 2017 and retained the seat in 2022. After the Samajwadi Party's win in 2012, Patel's back-to-back victories established a solid base for the party. In 2022, he polled 1,27,673 votes, far ahead of Samajwadi Party's Sushil Kumar Tibdewal with 64,942 votes. BSP's Dhirendra Pratap Singh was third with 33,498 votes. The BJP candidate's margin was over 62,000 votes.
Maharajganj Sadar (SC) moved from the Samajwadi Party in 2012 to the BJP in 2017, and the party has held it since. Jay Mangal Kanaujia returned to the assembly in 2022 for a second consecutive term, winning 1,36,071 votes. Independent Nirmesh Mangal was runner-up with 59,168 votes, while Geeta Ratna received 22,395 votes. The BJP's lead exceeded 76,000 votes.
Paniyara was earlier a BSP stronghold in 2007 and 2012. The BJP's Gyanendra Singh changed that by winning in 2017 and again in 2022, turning the seat into a party fortress. In 2022, he polled 1,35,463 votes and defeated Samajwadi Party's Krishnabhan Singh by 61,428 votes. BSP's Om Prakash Chaurasia secured 34,829 votes for third place.
Caste dynamics are widely seen as a decisive factor in Mahrajganj. The Sainthwar (Kurmi) community is considered influential in Paniyara and Siswa. Nishad, fishermen and other Most Backward Classes are decisive in Nautanwa. Brahmin, Thakur and Muslim voters carry weight in Farenda, while Dalit voters play a key role in Maharajganj Sadar (SC).
