Maharashtra Voter List Clean‑up Removes Centenarian Mistakes Promptly
In a recent audit of Maharashtra’s electoral roll, the Election Commission discovered that about 270,000 names were listed with ages exceeding 100 years. Acting on the request of the state’s Chief Electoral Officer, the commission’s SIR team resolved the issue within the prescribed timeline, well before the period for submitting objections ended.
The rapid resolution meant that senior voters were not required to submit Form‑8 for correcting their age details. Apart from age corrections, the SIR exercise also purged the list of deceased, duplicate, and shifted voters, and incorporated newly eligible electors. The commission underscored that the operation was impartial and followed established procedures, countering opposition narratives that suggested arbitrary deletions.
By addressing these discrepancies promptly, the commission reinforced confidence in the accuracy of the voter register ahead of the upcoming polls.
