Maharashtra’s Palghar District Records Rapid Successive Quakes

The Palghar district in Maharashtra experienced two rapid‑fire earthquakes on the night of August 10, with only about an hour separating the two incidents. Both tremors were logged at magnitude 3.4 and originated at a shallow depth of approximately five kilometres.

The first shock was logged at 10:04:11, its epicentre located at 19.883°N latitude and 73.164°E longitude. The second followed at 11:00:52 from a close coordinate of 19.912°N, 73.167°E, also emanating from a five‑kilometre depth.

Local inhabitants reported the sudden shaking and briefly moved outside, but there have been no confirmed reports of injuries or damage to property. Earlier in the week, a stronger magnitude‑4.3 earthquake was sensed in Nasik district, centred at 20.424°N, 73.682°E and likewise shallow.

Experts stress that low‑magnitude quakes are a regular feature of the region's seismic activity, yet the back‑to‑back nature of the Palghar events has raised community concerns. Authorities have appealed for calm, urging residents to stay alert and follow basic earthquake safety guidelines.
