Maharashtra Farmers Seek ₹1 Lakh per Hectare Compensation Amid Drought

New Delhi, October 10 – As the monsoon season failed to arrive, Maharashtra’s agricultural sector is grappling with a devastating drought that has ruined the entire Kharif harvest. Congress leaders from the state have raised the alarm, insisting that the government must act swiftly.

State President Shubhranshu Sarkar condemned the central government for delaying a formal relief package. "Declaring a drought is not enough; the people need immediate financial assistance," he said. The party is demanding a compensation of Rs 1 lakh per hectare for every farmer whose crop has been lost.

The call for compensation comes alongside broader accusations of electoral malpractice. Congress claims that the same government that neglects farmer relief is also interfering with the integrity of the Election Commission, enabling vote‑rigging in recent by‑elections.

Congress leaders argue that only a fair, transparent voting process can restore public trust. They point to constituencies like Nandigram and Rejignar where, under a truly free election, Congress candidates would have secured a decisive win.

The party also appealed to the central authorities to release the pending relief fund without further delay, emphasizing that the livelihoods of millions of farmers hang in the balance.

If the demands are met, Congress says it will intensify its campaign for a fully independent Election Commission and a comprehensive drought‑relief strategy that protects both democratic rights and agricultural stability.
