In a landmark event for Punjab's aviation landscape, the first commercial flight touched down at Halwara Airport near Ludhiana on Friday, ending decades of anticipation for better air links in the industrial heartland. The occasion was hailed by Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu as a game-changer for regional trade and development. Posting on X, Bittu shared his excitement after flying in on the inaugural service alongside MPs Vikramjit Sahni and Rajinder Gupta. "A 30-year dream realized! This airport will propel Ludhiana's industries to new heights," he stated, thanking PM Narendra Modi for prioritizing Punjab's growth. Ludhiana, famous for its textile mills, cycle parts, and machine tools, stands to gain immensely. Industry stakeholders have pushed for this airport to streamline cargo exports, attract investors, and ease executive travel. Enhanced connectivity is also expected to benefit residents of nearby areas, spurring economic activity across north India. This aviation boost comes amid broader infrastructure upgrades. The previous day, Bittu launched the Amrit Bharat Express from Amritsar to New Jalpaiguri—a budget-friendly, modern train tailored for everyday passengers seeking comfortable long-haul journeys. Connecting Punjab with key eastern states, the weekly service will foster commerce, tourism, and people-to-people ties. Bittu's announcements further revealed a Rs 5,673 crore rail budget hike for Punjab in 2026-27, alongside massive ongoing projects totaling over Rs 26,000 crore. The Amrit Bharat Station initiative is transforming 30 Punjab stations into modern transit hubs. Major overhauls at Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Mohali, and others promise superior facilities, aligning rail and air advancements to fuel Punjab's economic engine. As Halwara Airport spreads its wings, Ludhiana's boundless potential in global markets is set to unfold, marking a pivotal chapter in India's regional development story.
