Ludhiana's new 5‑tonne daily biogas plant aims to clean Budha Nala

Punjab’s agriculture minister announced on 14 August that a state‑funded compressed biogas plant will rise in Habowal, Ludhiana, at a cost of Rs 65 crore. Spread over 2.5 acres inside the local dairy complex, the plant is slated to go live by September 2027.

The facility will employ scientific processing methods to turn approximately 300 tonnes of cattle dung produced each day into about five tonnes of compressed biogas and a comparable amount of organic bio‑fertilizer. This conversion is expected to stop raw waste from entering the Budha Nala, thereby reducing blockages and water‑pollution in the area.

Beyond environmental benefits, the project aligns with the “waste‑to‑wealth” mission, directly supporting 435 dairy owners with a new revenue source. By offering a clean, renewable energy product and natural fertilizer, the plant also aims to boost organic farming and generate new jobs for young residents of the district.
