Lucknow Coaching Centre Blaze Prompts Comprehensive Safety Overhaul

A tragic fire at a Lucknow coaching centre on June 30 resulted in 15 fatalities and seven injuries, prompting Uttar Pradesh's Energy Minister AK Sharma to issue a sweeping set of safety directives. The minister arrived at the scene within hours, later visiting the victims' families and the hospital treating the injured.

In a press briefing, Sharma explained that the incident underscored the need for stricter electrical safety protocols and reinforced building standards across the state. The new directives mandate regular inspection of electrical installations, prohibition of makeshift wiring, and compulsory fire safety equipment for all educational institutions.

The guidelines also call for heightened vigilance in the approval process for high‑rise constructions. While the Urban Development Department handles zoning, the Housing Department will now play a decisive role in scrutinising structural safety before granting occupancy certificates.

A joint task force, featuring members of the electricity department, fire services, and local authorities, will monitor compliance and conduct surprise inspections. Sharma warned that ignoring these measures could lead to repeat incidents and urged all stakeholders to act responsibly.
