Lover's Escape After Grandmother's Gold Heist Leads to Arrest

In a startling turn of events, a lover's plan to secure a marriage turned criminal when Nandini Rameshwar Rathod lifted jewellery worth close to two lakh rupees from her own grandmother, Yamunabai Chavan, in Washim district. The theft was intended to finance her union with boyfriend Rameshwar Rathod. After the crime, the pair fled the rural setting and headed toward the bustling outskirts of Pune.

The Asegaon police, alerted by a complaint, launched a comprehensive investigation. Evidence indicated that portions of the stolen jewellery had entered the market through an unscrupulous silversmith. Leveraging forensic and technical data, investigators pinpointed the couple in the Mhalunge MIDC area of Pimpri‑Chinchwad. Both were arrested at the Savardari industrial zone. Items recovered included 30 tola of silver ornaments, an additional 32 tola of various silver pieces, a gold ring bought with the melted silver, and cash amounting to Rs 1.46 lakh. The case is being examined for further links to illicit jewellery trade.

The pattern mirrors a July incident in Nasik where a minor stole high‑value jewellery and cash during a family birthday celebration, later passing the loot to her boyfriend. That case also concluded with swift police arrests.
