Life-Saving Agatti-to-Kochi Evacuation Shows Coast Guard Readiness
A critical medical evacuation was carried out by the Indian Coast Guard on October 4, moving a 66‑year‑old man from the remote island of Agatti to the mainland city of Kochi. Severe weather and high seas made the operation difficult, but coordination among Lakshadweep authorities and the Coast Guard’s district headquarters in Kochi and Kavaratti ensured success. The patient required urgent neurosurgical care and continuous oxygen, leading to the dispatch of a Dornier aircraft from Kochi’s air station. In‑flight, medical personnel maintained oxygen supply and monitored the patient’s condition, allowing safe arrival at a Kochi medical facility. The rescue mirrors a prior operation where the Coast Guard saved a Bangladeshi sailor injured near Diglipur, highlighting its dual role in maritime safety and healthcare emergencies.
