Letter to Amit Shah: Sunil Jakhad calls for NIA and ED action on Punjab jail narcotics racket

In a post on the social media platform X, Sunil Jakhad announced that he has sent a written appeal to Home Minister Amit Shah seeking an NIA‑led investigation into the drug business allegedly running inside Punjab’s prisons under state protection. Jakhad also requested the ED to examine the money‑laundering dimensions of the case, citing the seizure of ₹7.09 crore in bank deposits, two locker safes, ₹1.49 crore in cash, 260 grams of gold, foreign exchange and property worth ₹2.40 crore from the arrested drug inspector Sheeshm Kumar. He argued that the narcotics network, which includes cross‑border smuggling links, has severely deteriorated law and order in Punjab, referencing the 2022 Manasa killing of a young man who opposed drug sales. The BJP leader criticized the Bhagwant Mann administration for not demanding an NIA probe or referring the matter to the ED, and for allegedly reinstating the inspector to a senior role after the ‘bell’ ceremony. Jakhad’s letter urges the central agencies to identify the masterminds behind the racket and to uncover how a criminal official could receive a high‑profile posting despite his involvement in illegal drug operations.
