Legislature Pauses After Paying Homage to Deceased SP MLA Alam Badi

Lucknow, 3 August – The Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly suspended its business on Monday after a condolence motion was passed for the late Samajwadi Party legislator Alam Badi. The motion, introduced by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, commemorated Badi’s long public service: born on 16 March 1936, he trained as an electrical engineer, won five consecutive elections from the Nazimabad constituency and founded the Koomi Ekta Manch, a forum dedicated to communal harmony.

The Speaker, Satish Mahana, read out a brief biography before the house observed a two‑minute silence. After the homage, the Speaker announced that the session would be adjourned until 11 a.m. on Tuesday, citing the need for legislators to reflect on the loss.

While the tributes were being paid, opposition members seized the opportunity to stage a protest on issues such as alleged irregularities in teacher recruitment, the handling of the Ram Mandir idol positioning and a supposed leak of the NEET examination paper. Posters and slogans filled the gallery as SP legislators pressed the government for answers.

Chief Minister Yogi, in his address before the adjournment, called for “positive and healthy discussion” in the coming days, reminding MLAs that the assembly is the most effective arena for addressing the concerns of the poor, farmers, youth and women. He also reiterated the state’s ongoing initiatives to enhance the welfare of outsourced employees and to resolve constituency‑specific grievances.

The day’s blend of reverence and political agitation sets a charged tone for the remainder of the monsoon session.
