Legal battle promised as Goswami's kin reject taking his remains

Guwahati, September 14 – The relatives of Ramanuj Goswami, who faced charges for the murder of his wife Riya Talukdar, have refused to accept his body after he died in what police describe as an encounter. The family, led by his father Tarun Goswami, announced that they will not travel to Guwahati nor cooperate with law enforcement to retrieve the corpse. They contend that the encounter was staged and have pledged to challenge the circumstances in court.

Police statements indicate that Goswami was being taken to Gauhati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) for a blood test early Monday morning. During the transit, he supposedly jumped from a police vehicle near the Narkasur hills, resulting in fatal injuries. GMCH officials verified that there was no bullet wound on the deceased and that he was brought to the casualty ward at 3:41 a.m. without signs of external gunfire. The hospital’s superintendent, Debjit Chowdhury, said that basic tests, including an ECG, were performed while a full post‑mortem is pending.

The accused had been arrested after the dismembered body of his 25‑year‑old wife was found in their Basishtapur home earlier this month. Authorities alleged that the murder followed a heated argument, with the victim’s head allegedly removed and placed in a refrigerator.

Tarun Goswami announced the family’s intent to file a petition in the Guwahati High Court and, if needed, take the case to the Supreme Court to obtain a transparent inquiry. He also requested that the media and public respect the family’s privacy while the legal process unfolds.
