Legal Battle Over Hospital Choice for Activist Sonam Wangchuk Continues
Senior advocate Kapil Sibal argued that there is no criminal case against his client and that she has the right to select the hospital and doctors of her choice. He requested that Wangchuk be moved to Medanta so that family members, friends and lawyers can meet her more easily.
The bench questioned why the petitioners distrust government doctors. Sibal replied that the aim is not to challenge the medical professionals but to create an environment where Wangchuk can receive visits without restriction.
The court recorded that Wangchuk is not in custody; her spouse, brother and brother‑in‑law have been allowed to stay with her around the clock, and a separate room has been provided for the family. Nonetheless, the High Court has not approved the demand to shift her to a private facility.
A further hearing is set for July 24, where the court will consider any new developments in her medical status and the petitioner's arguments.
