Legacy of Vijayaraj Kumari: Education and Social Service in Udaipur

Rajmata Vijayaraj Kumari, who passed away at 83, leaves behind a legacy tightly woven into the educational and social fabric of Udaipur. A member of the erstwhile Mewar royalty, she was born in Kutch and later became an integral part of the Mewar house after marrying Maharaja Arvind Singh. Her upbringing at the Franciscan Convent School gave her a blend of modern perspective and strong moral grounding, which she later applied to public initiatives. During the 1980s, she forged a close partnership with Maharana Mewar Public School (MMPS). Her vision helped shape the school into a contemporary institution that emphasized discipline, quality teaching and equal opportunity. Generations of students attribute their academic success and professional achievements to the reforms she championed. Beyond schooling, she actively supported women’s empowerment programmes, funding scholarships and encouraging community participation. Her contributions earned the respect of both the royal family and ordinary citizens, cementing her role as a bridge between tradition and progress. The state‑run funeral ceremonies, held at the City Palace and the historic cremation ghat, will serve as an occasion for the community to reflect on her enduring impact on education and social welfare.
